When people decide to quit smoking, they go through mental trauma – after all, their favorite habit is about to vanish in the blue. When they actually quit smoking they undergo both physiological and psychological traumas – Their mind is not at rest and their body craves for the deadly nicotine.
If you have decided to give up smoking and are afraid of the trauma involved, then take heart, because there exist some methods that can help you quit smoking the easy way, with no stress involved!
Before starting off on stop smoking program, a smoker needs to learn about the effects that nicotine withdrawal has on the body. He must scour around the Internet and find and read a whole lot of resources on the subject.
Quitting smoking will invariably require a smoker to take the help of stop smoking aids such as nicotine replacement therapies, mainly because if he deprives his body of nicotine suddenly, his carving for it will shoot up and he may even end up going back for a smoke.
He may also need an anti-depressant drug to keep himself in an okay frame of mind. Look, if you’ve been smoking for years, then giving it up will be a task, but then you have to face up to it, and here’s how you can do it nice and easy:
Nicotine replacement aids
Nicotine replacement aids are made up of nicotine inhalers, patches and chewing gum/lozenges. When a smoker gives up smoking, his body craves for nicotine – and these aids will help meet that need without going back for that one more puff.
Many smokers try to quit smoking without using these aids and lose their cool along the way. If these smokers use nicotine replacement aids, then their body’s need for nicotine will be fulfilled and these aids will also gradually wean them away from nicotine.
The dependence on nicotine replacement aids should end once the smoker doesn’t feel the urge to smoke anymore. If a smoker follows instructions on nicotine replacement aids, he will find himself no longer hooked to cigarettes by the time he is through with the replacement aids treatment.
Quitting smoking without using nicotine replacement aids
If a smoker wants to quit smoking without the help of any of the stop smoking products, then he has to do it the “Cold Turkey” way. Cold Turkey refers to a smoker quitting the habit in one go, all of a sudden. However, he may need help when he does this.
Also, as stated earlier, the smoker must know about the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Remember, kicking smoking all of a sudden is just like giving up on a drug such as heroin suddenly – there are consequences a smoker has to live up to.
The doctor’s role
Before going ahead and quitting smoking, the smoker must make it a point to discuss his strategy with a doctor. Maybe the doctor may feel that the smoker must get on an anti-depressant that can help tackle part of his withdrawal symptoms.
If a smoker feels he cannot do without aids, then he must discuss them with his doctor. Maybe the doctor can put him on to something better! A doctor must necessarily be involved in the quit smoking process, because he can help ensure a smooth transition.
