Anyone over 50 can probably remember what “old” people were 30 or 40 years ago. Usually they were people over 50! Most boomers no longer consider themselves old, which is quite possible with life expectancy going up year after year. But we need our health to assure us of a quality of life into our sixties, seventies and beyond.

Here are some really good tips to consider in order to grow old slowly, gracefully and healthfully.

1. Keep away from smoking. The most important general tip. We have all heard the many reasons not to smoke and to stay away from others’ smoke. If you smoke, stop smoking now. The sooner, the better.

2. Keep the weight down. Leanness is high on the list because fat cells have several bad effects - weight, hardening of the arteries and a propensity to cause type 2 diabetes.

If you ever begin to slip up and go back to smoking, ease up on your weight loss focus for just a moment to focus entirely on remaining a non-smoker. After you have successfully gotten over the hump and are an established non-smoker, you can begin to focus on weight management in earnest, in a way that best meets your goals and needs.

Part one talked about focusing on one thing at a time. First, quit smoking. When you have succeeded at that, then focus on keeping any extra weight off, or losing the weight you put on.

Here are tips 3, 4 and 5:

3. If you’re still having trouble losing weight, take a look at how many carbohydrates you’re consuming. You should opt for full fiber, whole-grain carbohydrates, and minimize or eliminate refined carbohydrates.

Don’t snack on candy or other carbohydrates as a replacement habit for your cigarette break. Instead, chew sugar-free gum or eat carrot sticks or celery to give you the same “mouth” feel as smoking a cigarette would.

If you just recently quit smoking and are starting to gain weight, take heart. You have two challenges ahead of you: staying away from cigarettes and managing your weight.

Take it slowly and one step at a time to keep both problems in check. If you’ve just quit, it’s likely that you’re still fighting the urge to resume smoking, so this is going to remain your first priority for at least the time being.

Your first priority in regard to your weight should be simply to stop gaining weight. After that, of course, your focus needs to remain on staying away from cigarettes.

Throughout the day, you need additional doses of nicotine every couple of hours. You are often willing to leave the comfort of a smoke-free environment to stand in the freezing cold, rain, or sweltering heat to get your next dose of nicotine. You are definitely in the second stage of nicotine addiction.

You initially become addicted to cigarettes because of the fast action of nicotine on the pleasure centers of your brain. When you puff on a cigarette, the nicotine in your lungs enters your blood stream and within 15 to 20 seconds begins to work on your brain.

Once in your brain, nicotine binds to receptors that are intended for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This binding causes a change in the cell walls that allow calcium or sodium ions to enter the cell. After that, a number of additional brain neurotransmitters are released.

These neurotransmitters affect your mood and behavior. The neurotransmitter dopamine affects the reward center that causes feelings of pleasure and enjoyment. Serotonin helps moderate your mood and controls your appetite. GABA produces a calming effect that reduces anxiety.

Does anyone have a kind word anymore for smokers? If you smoke, you are maligned by strangers, ostracized from public places and taxed beyond belief by local and state governments. Social workers accuse you of child abuse.

Environmentalists blame you for pollution. Doctors harp about your health. And the simple act of buying a pack of cigarettes can consign you to the poorhouse.

In the United States, an estimated 24 percent of men and 19 percent of women are smokers. These people are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

The theory behind the use of these products is that the nicotine absorption is low enough that it doesn’t provide the same pleasure as smoking an actual cigarette but it does help to alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal from the drug.

It’s important that the gum or patches aren’t used when a person is actually smoking because it can easily lead to an overdose of nicotine. An overdose or toxicity will lead to heart arrhythmias, nausea, headache and dangerous complications that will require immediate medical attention.

There are other nicotine delivery systems that include inhalers or nasal sprays that more closely mimic the delivery and impact of nicotine that’s obtained by smoking.
